Acne Before Rhinoplasty, What to Do and Whether to Treat It Before Surgery
Acne happens when pores become blocked by dead skin cells, oil from the oil glands and bacteria, causing inflammation, redness and swelling, and different types of spots. Acne can also be caused by hormone levels in the body, genetics, hormone changes with age, periods and how oily the skin on your face is. Regularly squeezing spots can also lead to inflamed acne.
Why Rhinoplasty Is Not Recommended While You Have Acne
Acne before rhinoplasty may carry a lot of bacteria, which can get into the wound during surgery and may increase the risk of infection and wound inflammation after surgery.
If spots appear on your nose before rhinoplasty or nose reshaping, tell the doctor in advance so they can reassess your surgery. If you have acne before rhinoplasty, we recommend using a spot treatment. Squeezing spots is not recommended, because it can make the tissue inflamed.
To help prevent acne before rhinoplasty, keep your face clean, avoid oily products or products that irritate the skin, avoid touching your face often and apply sunscreen every day. These simple steps can help reduce the causes of acne.

Preparing for Rhinoplasty
- Tell the doctor about any drug allergies, regular medicines, food allergies, medical conditions and previous surgery.
- If you have an infection on the face, such as sinusitis, pus, inflamed acne or a cold, have it fully treated before rhinoplasty or nose reshaping.
- Stop vitamins, supplements, aspirin and medicines that affect blood clotting for at least 2 weeks before surgery, and tell your surgeon if you take contraceptive pills so they can advise whether you need to stop them beforehand.
- Avoid alcohol and smoking for at least 2 weeks before surgery.
- Have a blood test and a health check.
- If you have a fever or feel unwell, please tell our staff beforehand.

What to Do If You Get Acne After Rhinoplasty or Nose Reshaping
Inflammation of the nose after rhinoplasty can happen. Signs that your nose may have a problem include:
- Swelling of the nose, which is common after surgery. The swelling usually goes down within 1 week and then gradually improves. If the swelling lasts longer than that, tell your doctor.
- Large, deep spots or inflamed spots that appear after surgery while the wound is drying and scabbing. This can still happen. If it does, do not squeeze or pick them. If you have large, deep spots with more swelling or pain than usual, tell your doctor so you can book an appointment to be checked.
- Fluid oozing from the wound. See a doctor straight away. Do not leave it, as it may lead to infection and more inflammation.
After rhinoplasty, spots can appear on the nose because the skin there has many pores, where blackheads and whiteheads can build up. After rhinoplasty or nose reshaping, the tissue in that area may also swell, or whiteheads may appear.
Because of this, many people who have rhinoplasty worry whether spots on the nose are dangerous, whether they will cause inflammation or infection, and whether they may lead to other damage
However, if you follow the doctor’s advice carefully and look after yourself after rhinoplasty or nose reshaping, there is no need to worry too much. If you get whiteheads or blackheads, avoid touching them or squeezing them yourself. If you get pus-filled spots or large, deep spots with pain, consult a doctor for advice on care to lower these risks. Follow it carefully, take antibiotics as your doctor advises and keep the area clean in the right way. These steps can help lower the risk.
