Interdomal Suture Technique, What It Is and How It Works
Interdomal suturing (interdome) is a rhinoplasty technique that reshapes the nasal tip so that it lifts and projects, by stitching and shaping the tip cartilage. It can help a large, wide nasal tip look narrower and more defined. This technique may suit Thai people who have a thick nasal tip.
In most rhinoplasty cases, the surgeon analyses your original nose shape and structure and the new shape you want, and then decides whether interdomal suturing is needed. It may not be needed in every case, and it also depends on the soft tissue of your nasal tip.
How Interdomal Suturing Is Done
For interdomal suturing, the surgeon makes incisions at the nasal tip on both sides to see the tip cartilage and stitch it closer together, and may place a silicone implant in position so that the tip projects and lifts. For a better result, it is often done as part of open rhinoplasty, so the surgeon can see the nose structure clearly and plan surgery to suit each person.
Who Interdomal Suturing May Suit
- people with a droopy nasal tip
- people with a round, large nasal tip
- people who want the nose to suit their face and be in better proportion
Common Nose Shapes in People Considering Rhinoplasty
- a nose that is out of proportion, with a low bridge
- a wide, flared tip with very visible nostrils
- large, wide nostrils that you would like to look narrower
Alar Base Reduction or Interdomal Suturing, Which Suits You
Interdomal suturing is a completely different technique from alar base reduction, because the suture does not remove any tissue. The nasal tissue stays as it is and is only adjusted to lift the tip and bring the two sides of the tip closer together.
However, whether to use interdomal suturing is part of the surgeon’s assessment, which needs experience in analysing your health and nose structure.
In these cases, you can have a consultation with the surgeon for advice on rhinoplasty and on your concerns. The surgeon will assess your health, nose structure and nose shape, and any health problems you have, to plan for the result you would like. Results depend on each person.
Can I Have Interdomal Suturing Later If My Rhinoplasty Did Not Give Enough Projection
If you have already had rhinoplasty and are not happy with the result, you cannot simply have interdomal suturing added on its own, because it needs an incision and the silicone implant has to be removed so that the surgeon can see the nose structure clearly. In people with a thick nasal tip, interdomal suturing alone will not make a visible change. For a better result, surgeons use interdomal suturing together with other techniques to reshape the nose.
