Ear Cartilage Rhinoplasty, Does Taking Ear Cartilage Weaken the Ear?
I love exercising and go to the gym often. Every time I go, I wear headphones, and at work I also like wearing headphones to listen to my favourite music and focus so the ideas keep flowing. But I had rhinoplasty a long time ago and the shape has started to change, so I want a new nose, and I have a question:
Does Rhinoplasty Using Ear Cartilage Affect Daily Life?
There are several rhinoplasty techniques, such as using a silicone implant, ear cartilage, rib cartilage or a tissue tip graft. For each technique, the doctor assesses in detail which one suits you, together with what you want, including the shape and your lifestyle.
Rhinoplasty using ear cartilage with the open technique can feel similar to a nose that has not had surgery before, and it usually has little effect on daily life. It is not expected to weaken the ear, because the piece of cartilage the doctor takes is very small. The wound on the ear gradually improves and usually leaves only a faint scar.
At S45 Clinic, surgeons with direct experience in nasal structure and open rhinoplasty using ear cartilage provide care in a clean medical facility with suitable equipment
We use a piece of ear cartilage (concha) only 2cm in size, from an area that is strong. Once it is removed, the doctor shapes it and uses it for rhinoplasty. Taking this cartilage is not expected to weaken the structure of the ear, change its shape or affect the nerves. The surgical wound gradually fades if you follow the doctor’s advice carefully, which also lowers the chance of a keloid scar.
If you are worried about your ear becoming weaker, taking this cartilage is not expected to weaken it, as described above. Using ear cartilage also lowers the chance of extrusion and of a reaction to silicone or other foreign material, because ear cartilage is your own tissue. It also reduces the friction that can cause the nasal tip to push through. With a silicone implant, if the doctor has less experience or the tissue at the nasal tip is thin, the risk is higher than when ear cartilage is used in rhinoplasty.
You can carry on with daily life as usual without changing your lifestyle. You can wear headphones, earrings and face masks without worrying about them falling off.
Who Is Ear Cartilage Rhinoplasty Suitable For?
- people with thin nasal skin and a thin tip
- people who have had rhinoplasty before and want to change the shape
- people with a history of implant extrusion
- people with a short nose or a low bridge
