Rhinoplasty Reference Photos and Why the Surgeon May Not Recommend Copying Them
You did your homework, chose a nose shape you like and a shape you want to correct towards, and showed it to the surgeon as your dream nose. So why did the surgeon say no and suggest a different shape? This can happen, and it is better to listen to the surgeon’s advice first.
Your dream nose may not suit your face shape or the problems with your existing nasal structure. Rhinoplasty or revision rhinoplasty is not just about making your nose look like someone else’s. It is about shaping a new nose or correcting the old one to suit your face and bring out your own features.

The reference photo you bring helps the surgeon understand clearly roughly how much height and projection you want. If your existing nasal structure has no problems that need correcting, you have enough nasal tissue that is not too thin, and your nose can be raised and projected like the reference you bring, it may be possible, and the surgeon will also consider your face shape.

At S45 Clinic, rhinoplasty and revision are not only about a better-looking nose shape, but about a design that suits your face and adds definition.

Why Surgeons Do Not Recommend Rhinoplasty Copied From a Reference Photo
Everyone’s face is different, with different facial bones, face shapes and proportions. A nose that looks good on someone else’s face may not suit yours, and you may not like the result, for example:

- People with a long face and people with a round face suit different nose shapes.
- People with a long face suit a slightly rounded nose shape.
- People with a round face suit a slimmer nose, which gives the face more definition.
- Facial bone structure, such as the cheekbones, is an important factor. For people with prominent cheekbones or a flat bone structure, the nose shape should not clash too much with the face, so it looks balanced and does not stand out too much.
- Nasal proportions, including the distance between the eyes, the width of the face and the position of the mouth, affect how the nose shape is designed, so the nose is not too high or too low. A nasal base width that suits your face helps the face look more balanced.
- Skin thickness matters. People with thick skin or enough nasal tissue can have the nose raised higher with rhinoplasty than people with thin skin or little tissue, so that the silicone implant does not rub against the skin, or the surgeon may consider adding tissue as well.
- People with a medical condition or a misshapen nose who want to reshape the nose along with treatment need the surgeon to consider their breathing, the nasal passages and other techniques that help with both breathing and nose shape.
- Age matters, because facial bones change with age every 10 years. So when the bone structure changes, the nose shape should still look good (if you do not want further revision).

A good-looking nose does not have to match your reference photo exactly. It should suit your face
Bring your reference photos and book a consultation with a surgeon
- They help the surgeon understand the style you like.
- Tell the surgeon what you want and listen to their advice.
- If the result will not match your reference, ask the surgeon why.
Note: Revision rhinoplasty, which many people know as ‘nose reshaping’, is surgery for people who have had nose surgery before and want a further assessment from a surgeon. The care plan depends on the original problem, the nasal structure and the surgeon’s judgement in each case.
