Sex After Rhinoplasty and Other Surgery, How Long Should You Wait?
After rhinoplasty, forehead augmentation, lip injections, fat removal and other procedures, when can you have sex again?
Sex often comes once you feel more confident in yourself. Recovery after some procedures may not take long, but for some types of surgery recovery is more complex, such as gender reassignment surgery or liposuction of a large volume of fat. Sex is a form of exercise, so if your body has not yet healed well, avoid it for now to help prevent side effects such as inflammation, infection or the silicone implant shifting out of place.

Recovery Time and When to Avoid Exercise or Sex
This depends on your health, the area and type of surgery, the type of material used and how strenuous the activity is.

The more you exert yourself, for example during exercise or vigorous sex, the harder your blood circulates, pumping more than usual. This can stimulate swelling in the muscles and throughout the body, and if the stimulation is too much, the extra circulation can cause swelling and slow down healing.
In some cases, the wound may open slightly and ooze blood after sex, even if that area was not touched. So how long should you wait before having sex after surgery? The answer depends on how vigorous the activity is. If you prefer rough, vigorous sex, we recommend a longer recovery than usual of at least 2 to 3 months, so that the wound heals well and closes fully. If your activity is gentle, you can have gentle sex again 14 days after surgery.
How Long to Recover Before Having Sex
- Closed rhinoplasty: avoid sex until the stitches are removed, or for at least 7 to 14 days
- Open rhinoplasty: recover for at least 7 days to 1 month
- Revision rhinoplasty with removal of liquid injections: rest for at least 3 months
- Breast surgery or breast augmentation: avoid sex for at least 1 to 3 months, and the breasts settle into place from 6 months after surgery onwards (depending on the surgeon’s technique)
- Chin augmentation: avoid sex for at least 2 weeks

All surgery carries a risk of complications. Follow your surgeon’s advice closely to support a good result. If you accidentally do certain activities and get bleeding, pain or swelling, contact your surgeon straight away.
Sex after plastic surgery is not forbidden, but it should be avoided for a while and planned for before surgery. Avoid strong impact, because it may make the wound swell, and heavy sweating can also make the wound moist
Note: Revision rhinoplasty, which many people know as ‘nose correction’, is surgery for people who have had nose surgery before and need a further assessment by the surgeon. The approach to care depends on the original problem, the nasal structure and the surgeon’s judgement in each case.
